I’m hoping to find a good source of elderberry plants to purchase near Grass Valley CA.

I'm desperately trying to find a way to buy Native Elderberry trees. I live in Weaverville, Ca. We would love to grow these here. I have talked with many in Trinity County and we'd love to be able to access these Native trees.

To find nurseries that sell native blue elderberry, I recommend the Calscape website. Type in Sambucus nigra spp cerulea. Once on the species page, go down to the middle where you will see a link to nurseries. https://calscape.org/nurseries.php?id=3375&showmap=1
I would check ahead with the nursery though, to make sure they have some in stock.
You might also want to check with your local Resource Conservation District, as they may be ordering elderberry for restoration or hedgerow projects.

In the summer during hikes in California, I have been been the habit of eating 4 or 5 small handfuls of ripe, raw elderberry with no ill effect. Recently I read that they are poisonous. Um, have I been poisoning myself?

We are a California Blue Elderberry grower here in Southern California. We selected 6 varieties of California wild Elderberry for propagation at our ranch. We chose the wild berries that had large clusters of ripe berries that are de-stemmed easily. We will be adding the selections to the website shortly for shipping in October, November and December.
